If you hate the Unity interface in the latest version of Ubuntu, try this.  From a terminal prompt, enter:

sudo apt-get install gnome-session-fallback

I’d assume that you could also install gnome-session-fallback from Synaptic if you prefer.  Then, choose “GNOME Classic” at signon.

  1. I’m quite sure synaptic is not installed by default…

    typing in which synaptic at the bash prompt didn’t show anything.

    Many people are skeptial of change with any OS but the unity is actulally not bad. There are some annoyances but I’m not a machine and I can learn to modify my behavior to accodomate the changes.
